Development of Security Guideline for Web PACS

Abstract

|
Background: Recent years have seen the spread of PACS in many medical and health institutions nation-wide. Also, the web PACS found its use in diverse clinical applications. As web PACS allows access to electronic patient records through internet, the information security should be maintained strictly against various hazard and threat. However, neither guidelines nor standards could be found in this application, especially in Korea. This study aimed at development of security guideline in web PACS that will ensure secure patient care activities in a new generation PACS environment which allows access to medical images and related patient information from anywhere through internet.
Materials and Methods: We evaluated the realities of web PACS usage and their security vulnerability in domestic medical institutions with questionnaires. We also developed a guideline and for web PACS security based on documents from international organizations for security standardization and through workshop and consultations with domestic experts group.
Results: Web PACS was in use for diverse applications including remote reporting, remote image viewing, consulting, and diagnostic reporting. The information security of web PACS was found vulnerable including lack of firewall and other basic security mechanisms.
